Scaling Student Support on the Journey to 1 Million

In the UK, UCAS projects that there could be up to a million higher education applicants in 2030, up from almost three quarters of a million today.

1,000,000.

That’s a lot of zeros. While the numbers are staggering, more importantly, they represent the dreams and aspirations of a multitude of young people.

This surge in demand for higher education is driven by a confluence of factors – from the rising 18-year-old population to the increase in internationally mobile students, alongside a commitment by UK organisations such as UCAS and NEON to widen access and increase participation of disadvantaged segments in higher education. Inevitably, on this journey to a million, there will be opportunities and challenges to ensure that all students, regardless of their unique circumstances, receive the support they need to thrive academically and personally.

Potential Potholes on the Journey to a Million

As we anticipate a significant increase in higher education applicants, it's essential to address the risks that may arise, such as:

  • Academic Disparities: Research indicates that less advantaged students often face obstacles in achieving academic success, such as lower grades in their first year and higher dropout rates.

  • Sense of Belonging: With an influx of applicants, students may struggle to establish a sense of belonging within their academic communities. This is particularly crucial during the initial transition to university life.

  • Unequal Access to Support: Disadvantaged students, in particular, may lack awareness of available resources, limiting their opportunities for personal and professional development.

  • Challenges of Scale: With the sheer volume of students, individuals or issues may fall through the cracks, leading to gaps in support and potentially hindering overall student success.
